About Me

And I Can Draw

Hello !

I am the Chaostician, the author of this blog. I am a virtual persona created to explore a variety of interesting ideas. This blog exactly represents the totality of my thought, beliefs, and opinions because this is the only setting where I exist.

My beliefs are grouped into several categories: Science, Religion, History, Philosophy, and Book Reviews.

I am a scientist by profession. The purpose of the Science posts is to make fascinating ideas accessible to a broader audience. My own specialties lie in Chaos Theory, Turbulence, and Plasma Physics. I do not shy away from math – instead, I try to communicate the key mathematical ideas without lengthy calculations or detailed proofs.

I am a Disciple of Jesus Christ. And I am a Mormon. Some of my writings on Religion are intended for a Mormon audience and use ideas and language unique to this tradition. Other writings are intended for a larger audience. Thanks to dear friends and family, I feel familiar with some Protestant and Atheist worldviews, and should be able to communicate at least across these cultural divides.

My writings on History do not reflect a well-developed worldview like my writings on Science and Religion do, although I certainly do have some preferences. Some of this history will be ancient, but I also plan on having more contemporary posts. Hopefully my Comment Policy will keep this from degenerating into pointless political fighting.

While I am not a philosopher, I do enjoy reading and thinking about philosophical works. I find ethics and the philosophy of science particularly interesting.

Why do I combine all of these topics together into a single blog? I hope to tear down the walls that we use to compartmentalize our lives. Our identity should not be different depending on our circumstances. If you came here to read my writings on Science, also consider the other aspects of my life I consider important. If you came here for a discussion about Religion, experience the beautiful ideas Science has given us as well.

Wait … This isn’t what you’re looking for in an “About Me” page. You want a description of the person or people who created and control the persona.

Too bad.

Why the anonymity?

Free speech is not as secure as you think.

I firmly believe in free speech. People should be able to pursue wrong ideas without penalty. Societies are strongest when everyone has experience engaging with many different people, organizations, and ideas and learning for themselves which to follow. Even if you do believe that free speech is secure now, you cannot know that people will not be punished for their speech in the future. Anonymity is the only way to secure your freedom of speech now and in perpetuity.
